“Blott Kids Backpack Project”
has been replaced by
School Pantry at Liberty School
Our church has provided the “hands and feet” and the storage space to pack bags of food for the elementary children of Liberty Schools for the past five years. Last September, Liberty opened a food pantry in the Liberty School building that is designed to serve students in all grades.
Second Harvest Food Bank has suggested to most school systems with in-school food pantries that this be the source for food for students, replacing the backpack project. So, for the 2019-2020 school year, we will not be packing bags of food for the children.
Sharon Wathen assists the school by ordering the food for the pantry at the school and making sure that food is delivered as it is needed. At the beginning, the school pantry served about 30 children. By May of 2019, that number was up to almost 150 children. It is expected that the traffic in the school pantry will increase throughout the new school year.
Funds have been provided by the Girard Liberty Rotary and some individual donors for the school pantry.
